काठमाडौंस्थित अमेरिकी राजदूतावासका अनुसार खातुनले अमेरिकी विदेश मन्त्रालयले दिने यस वर्षको इन्टरनेशनल विमेन अफ करेज अवार्ड पाएकी हुन् ।
यो अवार्ड पाउने १५ वर्षीया खातुन पहिलो नेपाली हुन् । यो अवार्ड पाउनेमध्ये खातुन विश्वकै सबैभन्दा कम उमेरकी व्यक्ति पनि वनेकी हुन् । एसिड आक्रमण अन्त्यका लागि गरेका कामका लागि उनलाई यो अवार्ड दिइएको राजदूतावासले जनाएको छ ।
खातुनले आफूमाथि घटेको दुःखद घटनालाई नेपालमा परिवर्तन ल्याउने एक अवसरमा रूपान्तरण गरेकी थिइन् । खातुनले तेजाब हमलाविरुद्ध कडा कानुन र सजाय दिने कानुन निर्माणका लागि प्रधानमन्त्री केपी शर्मा ओलीसँग भेटेर आग्रह गरेकी थिइन् । त्यसपछि प्रधानमन्त्रीले तेजाब हमलासम्बन्धी नयाँ कानुनको मस्यौदा तयार पार्न आग्रह गरेका थिए । उनले अपराधीलाई दण्डित गर्ने तथा रसायनको बिक्रीलाई नियमन गर्ने अध्यादेश जारी गरेका थिए । यो परिवर्तन ल्याउनमा खातुनको नेतृत्वदायी भूमिका रहेको दूतावासले जनाएको छ ।
गत वर्ष विद्यालय जाँदै गर्दा खातुनमाथि तेजाब आक्रमण भएको थियो ।
